The Austro-Prussian War that struck Bohemiain the summer of 1866 was without a doubt one of the mostsignificant events of the nineteenth century. Since 1936, the WarMuseum 1866 in Chlum has maintained the memory of this brutalconflict, which transformed both the borders and the balanceof power in Europe. The purpose of the museum and its exhibition(which was last innovated between 2010 and 2013) is to explain the rootsof the conflict, its progress, its consequences, and to serve asa remembrance of the fallen.
The text in the book was intended tosupplement the exhibition itself, with the decisive Battleof Hradec Králové on 3 June 1866 taking its primary focus. It alsodiscusses the larger context, origins, and consequencesof the conflict. The publication was intentionally composed in sucha way that it could also serve as a standalone piece independentlyof the exhibition itself. Its purpose is to provide the reader witha basic overview of the history of the Austro-Prussian War,regardless of the extent of their prior knowledge of the subject.
